What about God's omnipotence? Is he all powerful or is he not?
One answer that satisfies me is the following:
God CAN do everything He wants.
(i.e. He is all powerful)
However,
He does not WANT to do everything He can.
(i.e. He limits His omnipotence by His own will. And the source of His will is LOVE...)
How do God's love and his wrath fit together?
The distinction between his nature and his attributes helps me here.
The nature of God is LOVE.
His attributes flow from His nature:
His patience and His longsuffering,
His mercy and His grace,
His kindness and His faithfulness
- and also His wrath.
In His self-presentation to Moses, God Himself mentions these qualities (Ex 34:6):
merciful and gracious,
slow to anger
and rich in favour and faithfulness.
The apostle Paul also mentions these in the song of Love 1 Cor 13:
Love is longsuffering,
love is kind...
